Crop an Image Online

Cropping changes composition, not quality. Removing the edges of a photo leaves the remaining pixels exactly as they were — unlike resizing, which resamples every pixel.

Crop below with an optional aspect-ratio lock, plus rotate and flip. Everything happens in your browser.

Cropping versus resizing

These are different operations that people often conflate. Cropping discards pixels from the edges and keeps the rest untouched, so the subject stays exactly as sharp as it was. Resizing keeps the whole frame but resamples every pixel to a new grid, which always costs a little sharpness.

When you need a specific aspect ratio, crop. When you need a specific pixel size, resize. When you need both — a 1080 × 1080 square from a 4:3 photo — crop to the ratio first, then resize to the dimensions.

Locking the aspect ratio

Setting an explicit ratio before you crop keeps you from ending up slightly off-target and having to squash the result to fit. Useful ones: 1:1 for profile pictures and Instagram squares, 4:5 for Instagram portrait posts, 9:16 for stories and reels, 16:9 for YouTube and video thumbnails, and 7:9 for 35 × 45mm passport photos.

In this tool the crop ratio follows the resize dimensions you have set, so entering your target output size automatically constrains the crop box to match.

Rotate and flip

Rotation is lossless at 90-degree increments — the pixels are simply rearranged. At arbitrary angles the image has to be resampled and the corners filled, so there is a small quality cost and usually a crop afterwards.

Flipping is always lossless. It is most often used to correct selfies, which front cameras mirror by default — a detail that matters for passport photos, where a mirrored image can be rejected.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Cropping removes pixels from the edges and leaves the rest untouched. The file gets smaller because there are fewer pixels, not because they are worse.
Can I crop to an exact aspect ratio?
Yes. Set your target width and height and the crop box locks to that ratio, so the crop and the output size agree.
Are my photos uploaded to crop them?
No. Cropping happens in your browser via the Canvas API, and no file is sent anywhere.
