The mobile crop
On desktop you get the full 851 × 315. On mobile, Facebook crops to roughly 640 × 360 — taller and much narrower, taking a centre slice and cutting off about a quarter of the width from each side.
Keep logos, text and faces within the central 640 pixels. Treat the outer edges as decorative background that may not be seen.
Link previews
If you are setting the image that appears when your site is shared, that is the og:image tag, and it wants 1200 × 630 — not the cover size.
Facebook requires at least 600 × 315 and caps the file at 8MB. Below the minimum it falls back to a small thumbnail or no image, which noticeably reduces click-through.
