The e-Visa specification
From the Directorate General of Immigration’s e-Visa portal:
- Size: 4 × 6 cm (40 × 60mm), a 2:3 portrait ratio.
- Minimum resolution: 400 × 600 pixels.
- Formats: JPEG, JPG or PNG, in colour.
- Maximum file size: 2MB.
- Head height: top of the head including hair to the bottom of the chin must be 50–60% of the image height.
- Eye level: between 50% and 60% of the image height, measured from the bottom.
- Face forward, clear and in focus, recent.
The framing rule is looser than most
At 50–60% head height, Indonesia wants the face noticeably smaller in the frame than Schengen (70–80%) or Vietnam (70–80%). A photo cropped tightly to ICAO proportions will be too close.
On a 600-pixel-tall image, that means chin to crown should measure roughly 300–360 pixels, with the eyes sitting 300–360 pixels up from the bottom edge. Leave visible space above the head and include the shoulders.
Background colour: white or red
The e-Visa portal does not mandate a background colour, and in practice white is accepted. However, some Indonesian consulates — and certain document types such as KITAS and work permits — specifically ask for a red background, which is a convention you will not meet anywhere else in the region.
Check your specific application type before shooting. If it asks for red, that has to be done at capture or in an editor; this tool handles cropping, resizing and compression but not background replacement.
Frequently asked questions
- What size photo for an Indonesian visa?
- 4 × 6 cm, at minimum 400 × 600 pixels, as a JPEG or PNG under 2MB.
- Does Indonesia need a red background?
- The e-Visa portal does not require one and white is generally accepted, but some consulates and permit types (KITAS, work permits) do ask for red. Check your specific application.
- Is 4x6 cm the same as 35x45mm?
- No. 4 × 6 cm is 40 × 60mm, a 2:3 ratio — noticeably taller and a different shape from the 7:9 of 35 × 45mm. They are not interchangeable.
- How much of the frame should my face fill?
- 50–60% of the image height from chin to crown, which is looser than most countries. Do not crop tightly.
