Vietnam e-Visa Photo – 4 × 6 cm

Vietnam’s e-Visa portal requires a 4 × 6 cm portrait photo as a JPG under 1MB. The 1MB cap is tighter than most visa systems, and JPG is the only accepted format — PNG uploads are refused.

The tool below is set to 472 × 709 pixels (4 × 6 cm at 300 DPI) with a 1MB ceiling.

The e-Visa specification

From the Vietnam Immigration Department’s National Electronic Visa portal:

  • Size: 4 × 6 cm (40 × 60mm), portrait, a 2:3 ratio.
  • Format: JPG or JPEG only. PNG is not accepted.
  • Maximum file size: 1MB.
  • Resolution: minimum 300 DPI, so 472 × 709 pixels at 4 × 6 cm.
  • Background: plain white.
  • Face coverage: 70–80% of the image height.
  • No hat, no glasses. Looking straight at the camera.
  • Taken within the last 6 months, in colour, unaltered by software.

The two rules that cause most rejections

Format and file size. The portal accepts JPG and JPEG only, and renaming a .png to .jpg does not work — the file is inspected, not trusted by extension. Re-encode properly, which is what this tool does when JPG is selected.

The 1MB cap is also tighter than people expect for a visa photo. At 472 × 709 pixels a good-quality JPEG lands well under it, so this only becomes a problem if you upload at full camera resolution. Set the dimensions first and the size follows.

Glasses are not allowed

Vietnam prohibits glasses outright in e-Visa photos, with no exception for prescription lenses. This differs from most of the region, where clear glasses without glare are tolerated.

Remove them before the photo rather than hoping the reflection is not noticeable — this is a common rejection and the application fee is not refunded.

Indonesia uses the same size

Both Vietnam and Indonesia use 4 × 6 cm for visa photos, so one correctly framed photo can often serve both — handy if you are travelling through the region.

The constraints differ though: Vietnam caps files at 1MB and accepts only JPG, while Indonesia allows up to 2MB and accepts PNG. Vietnam also wants the face filling 70–80% of the frame against Indonesia’s 50–60%, so the crops are not interchangeable even though the dimensions are.

Frequently asked questions

What photo size does the Vietnam e-Visa need?
4 × 6 cm portrait, which is 472 × 709 pixels at 300 DPI, as a JPG under 1MB.
Can I upload a PNG?
No. The portal accepts JPG and JPEG only, and checks the actual file rather than the extension, so renaming does not work.
Are glasses allowed?
No. Vietnam prohibits glasses in e-Visa photos, including prescription lenses.
Can I use the same photo for Indonesia?
The dimensions match at 4 × 6 cm, but the crops differ — Vietnam wants the face at 70–80% of the frame, Indonesia at 50–60%. You would need to re-crop.
