35 × 45mm or 2 × 2 inches — which do you need?
Both are standard in the Philippines, for different things. Getting them the wrong way round means a rejected application or a wasted trip.
| Document | Size | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| Philippine passport (DFA) | 35 × 45mm | 413 × 531 |
| NBI clearance | 2 × 2 in | 600 × 600 |
| SSS / UMID | 2 × 2 in | 600 × 600 |
| LTO driver’s licence | 2 × 2 in | 600 × 600 |
| PRC applications | 2 × 2 in | 600 × 600 |
| School / company ID | 1 × 1 or 2 × 2 in | 300 × 300 / 600 × 600 |
| US visa (filed from PH) | 2 × 2 in | 600 × 600 |
DFA passport requirements
For a Philippine passport — new, renewal or replacement:
- Size: 35 × 45mm (4.5 × 3.5 cm), portrait.
- Resolution: minimum 300 DPI.
- Background: pure white, no shadow or pattern.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera.
- No eyeglasses — including prescription lenses.
- No headwear except permanent religious wear.
- Taken within the last 6 months.
A note on DFA appointments
For most passport appointments the DFA captures your photo on site, so you do not bring one. A photo you prepare yourself is mainly needed for online forms, courier renewals, and applications made through an embassy or consulate abroad.
If you are being photographed at the branch, the rules that still apply to you are the ones about appearance rather than file size: no glasses, no sleeveless tops, no white top against the white background.
Getting a 2 × 2 instead
If what you actually need is the square format — for NBI, SSS, LTO, PRC or a US visa — set the width and height to 600 × 600 pixels, or switch to millimetres and enter 51 × 51.
A 2 × 2 is square, so a portrait photo needs cropping from the top and bottom rather than the sides. Centre the face and leave a little space above the head.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Philippine passport photo 2x2 inches?
- No. The DFA passport photo is 35 × 45mm, a portrait rectangle. 2 × 2 inches is used for NBI clearance, SSS, UMID, LTO, PRC and US visa applications.
- What is 2x2 picture size in pixels?
- 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI. In millimetres it is 51 × 51mm.
- Do I need to bring a photo to my DFA appointment?
- Usually not — the DFA photographs you on site. Prepare your own for online forms, courier renewals, or applications through an embassy abroad.
- Can I wear glasses in a Philippine passport photo?
- No. The DFA does not allow eyeglasses, including prescription lenses.
